Nerdy Sports

I swung by basketball, volleyball, soccer and baseball practice recently and realized something. Some sports have more "advanced" students than "regular".

Nearly everyone on both the men and women's basketball teams are "advanced" students and the few that aren't are some of the best students in the "regular" class. The same pretty much goes for volleyball.

But then the opposite is true for both baseball and soccer. Most of the the baseball and soccer players are "regular" students while the few "advanced" students who play are...um...not quite at the same level as their peers.

I haven't a clue as to why this is. Any thoughts on this correlation?

  1. Aren't baseall and soccer much more popular in Japan than basketball and volleyball? The latter might be seen as niche sports that are more appealing to those advanced students. Meanwhile, baseball and soccer are sports that are more appealing to everyone.

It's the same thing in the US. American football and basketball are the most popular sports, so everyone plays those. Meanwhile, most high school soccer teams have a higher proportion of AP students.

  2. Hmmm, that's a good point. I didn't think of it that way. Baseball and soccer are more popular here than basketball and volleyball.

And it corresponds with my HS days. The "advanced" kids would play tennis while the "regular" kids played basketball, football, baseball--sports that were more popular in the US
